Book Review: Napoleon, a Life

I read this book around when Ridley Scott’s Napoleon came out; French critics weren’t the biggest fan, and indeed the movie seemed more embellished than I expected.

I also visited Paris soon after reading the book (by coincidence) and was surprised Napoleon was literally everywhere. Forget about the monuments and mausoleums, just walk around Paris or take the subway and walk through the Gare d’Austerlitz or la place d’Iena. The French really love their Grand General that they name streets and stations after his great victories. I also visited l’Hotel des Invalides which serves as a military museum centered around Napoleon’s tomb.
